With insurance for young drivers seeming to be ever increasing, the DVLA are hearing of reports that claim parents have been \u2018insurance fronting\u2019 for their children. Before recent years, insurance fronting was an uncommon term but in 2015 a recent study showed that one in ten parents admit to front their child\u2019s car insurance.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

What is Insurance Fronting<\/h2>\n

Insurance fronting is classed as fraud, because although usually carried out by parents, it is the act in which the named main driver is not, in reality, the vehicles main driver. Parents committing insurance fronting fraud say that they are the main driver of a car when in fact their child carries out most or all of the driving.<\/p>\n

As you can imagine, this can save families a huge amount of money, as the insurance for the child as a main driver of a car is likely to be far higher than that of a parent who has been driving for years. Insurance premiums for new drivers are high for a reason, and that\u2019s because they are more likely to be involved in an accident.<\/p>\n

The Cost of Insurance Fronting<\/h2>\n

While fronting is usually done as a well-meaning gesture, the rise of parents doing means the implications of such fraud are becoming more and more of a worry. According to the DVLA, committing this crime can actually end up making driving more expensive for all parties involved. For example, once caught, the new driver will find it extremely difficult to obtain insurance later on in life.<\/p>\n

Despite this, the study also found that 27% of those fronting insurance are doing it for children who only have a provisional licence. Even more of a concern is the fact that further research revealed most parents are willing to front, despite the majority (81% to be exact) are well aware that it is illegal.<\/p>\n

Car Insurance Industry Response<\/h2>\n

The head of telematics at The Co-Operative, Steve Kerrigan, said “These finding show that fronting continues to be an issue for both consumers and the insurance industry. Whilst many parents think that they are doing their children a favour by fronting insurance for them, in reality the consequences of doing this could be serious and costly if, for example, they need to make a claim.<\/p>\n

When it comes to provisional drivers what seems to be harmless act even lead to a loss of licence. Insurers such as ourselves are increasingly pricing car insurance based on the riskiest drivers rather than who is presented as the main driver in an effort to combat the impact of fronting. Likewise, young drivers can utilise telematics policies to help keep the cost of their insurance down as these price on how the young person drives, rather than looking simply at a risk rating.”<\/p>\n
