Theory test<\/b> cheats, driving test bribes, drink & drug use and no insurance, just some of the factors that contributed to 10, 797 UK motorists losing their driving licences.<\/p>\n
Shocking new figures released, following a Freedom of Information request issued to the DVLA, revealed that 10,797 motorists with less than two years\u2019 driving experience had their licences rescinded.<\/p>\n
Top of the list was no insurance, with over 50 per cent of motorists caught driving on Britain\u2019s roads without cover. Second on the list was speeding, which was an offence shared by provisional and full driving licence holders alike.<\/p>\n
Theory test<\/b> cheats also accounted for a large proportion of driving licence revocations, which the DVLA said was on the rise. More and more people are cheating on the theory test<\/b> either by bribing theory test<\/b> exam invigilators, sneaking mobile phones into the test room or simply sending someone else to impersonate them in order to pass the theory test<\/b>. The DVLA said the problem of theory test<\/b> cheats is escalating.<\/p>\n
According to the figures, approximately 0.6% of licences were rescinded due to \u2018drug or drink driving\u2019 offences and whilst figures are down when compared with 2010, drink and drug offences are still a huge problem on Britain\u2019s roads according to the DVLA.<\/p>\n
In order to tackle such offences it was decided that drivers who receive six points or more on their licence would have to re-sit both the theory test<\/b> and practical driving exam. However, some commentators argue that the deterrent has proved ineffective.<\/p>\n
One commentator said: \u201cYou\u2019re trying to make people re-sit the theory test<\/b> and practical driving exam who have committed driving offences. If they have been driving illegally prior to having their licence revoked, they\u2019re not likely to re-sit the theory test<\/b> or practical driving exam. They will simply just carry on driving, licence or not.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a statement from the Association of British Insurers (ABI), in relation to those having licences revoked for no insurance, they said: \u201cDue to advances in technology, people driving uninsured are being identified in a much better way. So if they are not on the central database showing they are insured, they will face severe ramifications.\u201d<\/p>\n
Scott Pendry of the ABI said: \u201cThe reason a high proportion of drivers were prosecuted for being uninsured was because they were easier to catch.\u201d<\/p>\n
The ABI also said that they fully back an overhaul of the UK theory test<\/b> and supports calls for improved driver training, curfews and the implementation of a minimum learning period.<\/p>\n
