One of the many different factors that are taken into account by insurance providers while working out the cost of your car insurance is your occupation. The fact is that even the manner in which you describe the job that you do can actually have a massive impact on the amount of car insurance you will end up having to pay for.
Different jobs come with different risks
The kind of job that you perform can affect the quote for car insurance that you may be offered. Jobs that involve a lot of regular driving can potentially result in much more expensive premiums, as can employment that entails you carrying expensive stock or equipment in your car. Your occupation can still make a difference to your car insurance premiums, even if you do not actually make use of the vehicle as a part of your job, and merely use it to get to work and back home again, because the insurance industry considers some professions to be inherently riskier than others.
Expensive occupations for car insurance
While some jobs that increase the cost of insurance may seem obvious, such as racing car driver, there are also a number of seemingly regular and innocuous professions that can also have an impact on that bottom line. Footballers, exotic dancers and scrap dealers are, perhaps unsurprisingly, among the top professions in the United Kingdom that can send insurance premiums through the roof – but it’s also the case that funfair employees, students and apprentices, canvassers, disc jockeys and even window cleaners and journalists are likely to pay more.
Rewriting your job description
It might sound strange, but people may actually be able to save money simply by tweaking the details of their job description, even if they are still essentially entering the exact same job (that could cost them more in insurance premiums) with a slightly different description. A good example of how to tweak your job description while still telling the truth is to describe yourself as an illustrator instead of an artist, as this can result in a reduction in the price of your premium. The other difficulty of job descriptions is that although many jobs are listed by most insurance companies, they may not always have one that fully describes the job you actually perform, so try to pick the one that most accurately fits your real job description, even if it is not perfect. However it is important to still tell the truth, as lying about your profession will render your policy invalid in the event you need to make a claim.
There are of course a number of other factors besides occupation that will have a bearing on the price of your car insurance premium, such as the likes of age, driving history, whether you or not you are a new driver, and the kind of car you drive. The difference is simply that while those factors are set in stone, there are ways to legitimately describe your job in different words that can ultimately result in you paying less for your car insurance.
