The Day Before Your Theory Test

The theory test is an important one that you need to pass successfully in order to go onto taking your practical driving test. Introduced nearly 30 years ago, the theory test is a computer-based exam that tests your knowledge on a number of topics including hazard perception.

According to statistics released from the DVSA, more than a third of 17 year olds failed their driving theory tests back in 2010 and 2011, with the numbers of failed theory tests increasing for 18 and 19-year olds in that period!

Perhaps unsurprisingly, older generations had a lower failure rate. What those statistics don’t tell you is that youngsters are often to blame not because of their lack of knowledge, but because they got up to all sorts of stupid activities before sitting their theory test exams!

If you are considering going for your driving theory test, here are a few things that you should never do before the big day!

Don’t get drunk

One of the most-common causes for theory test failure is the fact that many people go out binge-drinking the night before.

I don’t need to sit here and explain how drinking can impair your concentration and cognitive abilities, and cause short-term memory loss because you will probably be aware of those facts. It is for those reasons that you should avoid drinking any alcohol the night before test day!

Don’t forget the date and time of your test

Astonishingly, lots of people don’t even get a chance to take their driving theory tests because they turned up at the test centre on the wrong day, or they have turned up later than the time they were supposed to be there for!

I know that sometimes there are events that are unavoidable in life, and some of these events can make you late for appointments, but oversleeping, for example, is something that you can avoid!

Have a good night’s sleep

Following on from the point above about oversleeping, it is vital that you have a good night’s sleep the night before you are due to take your driving theory test.

Staying up until the early hours of the morning might have been a fun idea at the time, but you will soon pay for it when you eventually make it to the theory test centre and find that you are unable to concentrate because you are feeling so tired!

Don’t forget to take some practice exams

As with any test that you have to take in life, you should make sure that you take plenty of practice exams before you go for the real thing.

Whilst no-one can guarantee that all of the questions in your practice exams are going to be exactly the same as the ones in the real theory test, you will know what to expect on the day.

Try to take practice exams from multiple sources, as this helps you to find out the range of questions you are likely to be asked in your theory test.
