With longer days and warmer weather fast becoming a reality, many people will be looking for some great outings, fun things to do – and new places to drive. There is so much going on this spring and summer, no matter which part of the country you live in, or want to visit. If you’ve recently passed your driving test and don’t want to travel too far, especially if you have children, then look for outings in and around your local area. Below are some events and places that you might enjoy on a warm and sunny afternoon this year.
Cromford Mill, Matlock, Derbyshire
For those who live anywhere in or around the county of Derbyshire, then Cromford Mill in Matlock (DE4 3EQ) is a great place to see. The building holds Arkwright’s original mill, one of the first of its kind in the country. Each weekend afternoon there are guided tours around the mill, and you can get times for those tours, and cost of tickets from the website, or Derbyshire County Council (Matlock Office). Once you’ve seen the mill itself, there are a few shops, including a souvenir shop and a café if you want to rest your feet and grab a coffee. On Easter weekend there is an Alice in Wonderland themed workshop, which most children will enjoy.
Twycross Zoo
Twycross Zoo is off the M40 in Warwickshire (CV9 3PX). A visit to the zoo is a great day out, whether or not you have children, and it’s a short drive from both Derby and Birmingham. It’s not just animals at Twycross; the people there run various events throughout the year. The London Eye, and More
As the UK’s capital city, London has so much to offer. Both its inhabitants and the many visitors to this ancient city find more than enough to do. If you have never visited London’s South Bank, and you’re planning on being in the city this spring or summer, then go for a ride on the London Eye and see the panoramic views of both the city itself and the River Thames. Visit the Tate Modern or the Science Museum, and if you’ve never been there, then Horse Guards parade and Buckingham Palace attract millions of visitors each year. Just one thing, use the great public transport system from outer London inwards, rather than your own vehicle – congestion charges and parking can amount to a huge sum of money!
Brighton
If you’re further south in the country there is always something going on in Brighton. Apart from the beach itself and the various fun palaces, Brighton is a popular place with visitors, so there is always something going on. Coming up this spring there is the Doreen Valiente Collection at Preston Manor, and an open house Artists Festival. 2016 Brighton is a young, vibrant destination, with plenty of local attractions, including the lanes.
