Late last month Hands Roads Policing took to Twitter to announce a shocking drink driving scenario that took place on the night of 27th September. Though dangerous and illegal, drink driving is a fairly common crime, but what’s unusual about this case is how the crime was carried out by a learner and their supervisor – both of which failed to pass a breathalyser test, blowing over 100 mg of alcohol during the test.
@HantsPolRoads said, “Two people arrested last night for drink driving. What’s unusal…??? It was a learner driver and their supervisor both blew over 100.”
The following day Hampshire officers confirmed that they had charged the 39-year-old supervisor from Southampton, as well as Lucas Herliczka, the driver, who is now due to appear in Southampton Magistrates Court this month after being charged for driving a motor vehicle while exceeding the alcohol limit.
To further this, a 32-year-old man from Oxfordshire was also arrested in connection with the incident but was soon released with no further action taken.
With one in seven deaths on the road involving those who are over the legal limit, it’s clear to see why both the police and the public were astonished to hear of such a story. Luckily, in this uncommon case, no one was injured – but it could have easily taken a turn for the worse.
For those of you reading this unsure of the current legal for driving, it is 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. That being said, any amount of alcohol has the ability to impair a driver’s ability to judge and react properly. Those who do drive under the influence are known to have slow reaction times.
Interestingly, and for many people somewhat unknown, is that a woman’s body typically takes longer to eliminate alcohol from the blood. It is through not knowing this that many women end up arrested for drink driving the following day of a heavy night out, as the alcohol is still in the blood stream.
There is no fool-proof way of drinking alcohol and still staying under the limit, as the amount of alcohol that ends up in an individuals blood stream varies massively, depending on this such as their weight, gender, stress levels, eating habits and age.
Stay Safe
To ensure the safety of both yourself and others, it is always best to steer well clear of the roads when alcohol has any part to play. If you are caught on the roads while drink driving, the police have the right to investigate by carrying out a screening breath test on the roadside. Known as the breathalyser, this screening test will determine whether or not you are over the drink driving limit.
If you fail the test, or the police officers still believe your driving is somehow impaired, you will be arrested and taken to the police station to provide two more breath specimens. The lowest of the two reading is then used to decide whether or not you are above the drink driving limit.
