Book Your Theory Test Online blogger unravels the mystery behind candidates failing the theory test or practical driving test second time around.
It’s a disappointing experience when you fail the UK theory test or practical driving test, especially when you consider the money you’ve spent and the time you’ve invested to prepare.
Current statistics for both the driving theory test and practical exam indicate that over half of candidates fail to successfully complete either of them at the first attempt. However, what’s more worrying is that the research also shows that those who go on to retake the test experience further disappointment.
The more attempts to pass a theory test or practical driving exam actually reduces the chances of a candidate passing.
To demonstrate the declining odds for constantly retaking the practical driving exam, see figure 1 below:
By the time a candidate reaches a 12th attempt at the practical driving exam there is a steep decline in the odds of passing.
In a statement from one candidate, interviewed whilst the research was compiled, she said: “I’ve failed my practical driving test 8 times, prior to getting to this stage I’d failed the theory test 12 times. The situation makes me feel like a complete failure. It’s disheartening, embarrassing and frustrating, especially when I’ve seen other drives make numerous mistakes but still pass.”
Speaking about her theory test experiences, she said: “The first time I took the theory test I was confident I would pass, I thought I’d prepared well. However, with every theory test failure I just became more and more demoralised and it just seemed like the test was getting harder. I began to enter the exam convincing myself I’d fail.”
She continued: “However, it wasn’t just my mind-set that was the problem my cause wasn’t helped by changes to the theory test that took place during the time I was taking all of mine. New questions were added that did not feature in the theory test resources I had. When it came to the practical exam a whole new section on vehicle maintenance was introduced.”
